This is reknowned constitutional scholar, Erwin Chemerinsky. Already from the image on the left, one can tell this guy is pretty 1337. As a fifth year at UC Irvine^1, I think his re-appointment (do i need to revisit the debacle?– shame on you, Chancellor Drake– I miss Chancellor Cicerone and his amusing PSAs at KUCI as well as his calls for countering global warming) is probably the most refreshing news to UC Irvine. I think his controversial opinions and assertiveness towards the defense of civil liberties is just what the sterile, encapsulated campus/city need. I’ve enjoyed reading his law reviews and op-ed pieces. He articulates a lot of things I would probably fear to say in my own papers- and he does it with poise and prestige. Here’s a quick read that doesn’t require knowledge of any constitutionally-loaded terms. The UCI law school (I think it’s going to be called Donald Bren law school–what at UCI isn’t named after him–oh right, our alochol-free “pub”) will officially enroll the first class Fall of 2009, and while I admire Chemerinsky to the fullest capacity, his appointment as law school dean (1) does not persuade me to stay in Irvine for another 3 or 4 years and (2) does not convince me to repudiate my distaste for applying to law school^2
i leave you with a quote from everyone’s favorite…Pat Robertson: “Feminism encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.”
^1: besides all the beautiful friends I have made, the best decision I ever made at UCI was probably leaving for a semester abroad
^2: In a Chancellor-Drake fashion, I “fired”any desire to apply to law school and decided to undertake a masters degree in public policy which will also leave me very broke and finding myself in a fixed, rigid occupation.
